Can Anxiety Be Managed Naturally?

As far as mental health conditions go, anxiety seems to run rampant across the globe. It affects millions of people, thriving on feelings of fear and getting fueled by all the “what ifs” life has to offer.

If there’s a potential silver lining to so many people dealing with anxiety, it’s that there are plenty of treatment options. Many people can manage their symptoms more effectively with medication, and there’s no shortage of varieties.

But, for those who might not be interested in prescriptions, what can you do? Can anxiety be managed naturally?

The answer is a resounding yes. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort while surrounding yourself with the right kind of support, you can manage your anxiety in natural ways. Let’s take a look at a few of the best strategies.

Be More Mindful

Again, anxiety tends to be fueled by all the “what ifs” that can enter your mind. It can be triggered when you overthink about something that happened in the past, or when you worry about something that might happen in the future.

One of the best ways to combat those “what ifs” is by practicing mindfulness.

Mindfulness is about focusing on the present. Close your eyes and inhale slowly and deeply. Tune in to your senses while you do. What do you hear? What do you smell? How does your body feel right now? Exhale just as slowly.

While negative, anxious thoughts might still try to creep in as you’re being mindful, your job is to let them pass you by. Think of them like big, fluffy clouds that are blowing away slowly, and you can’t hold on to them.

Just a few minutes of mindfulness each day, or whenever you’re feeling particularly anxious, can bring you back to reality and make it easier to keep your symptoms in check.

Get Physical

Most people understand the importance of exercise for physical health, but it can also do wonders for your mental well-being.

Exercising every day can help to reduce your stress levels. So, you might be less triggered by things that would typically make you anxious. Additionally, physical activity helps to release endorphins and serotonin in the brain. These chemicals are responsible for making you feel calm and happy. Those feelings will linger for hours after a good workout.

You don’t have to run a marathon to enjoy the mental health benefits of exercise. Find something that appeals to you and you’ll be more likely to stick with it.

Get Enough Sleep

Anxiety and a lack of sleep go hand-in-hand. They create a vicious cycle that can make you feel worse. Many people with anxiety have a hard time getting enough sleep because their anxious thoughts get worse at night.

Unfortunately, the less sleep you get, the worse your anxiety is likely to become.

Fight back by adopting better sleep hygiene habits. Go to bed at the same time each night, avoid distractions, don’t use electronics for an hour before you go to sleep, and consider keeping a journal by your bedside. If you have an anxious thought in the night, jot it down in the journal. Sometimes, getting it “out there” instead of letting it linger in your mind can help you move on and get some rest.

Talk to Someone

Perhaps the best way to manage anxiety naturally is to work with a mental health professional. Anxiety can often be treated, but it’s not something you have to do on your own. Anxiety therapy can help you understand where your anxiety is coming from. When you get to the root cause, you’ll have an easier time fighting back.
